Southampton snatched the top of the Premier League for the
first time since 1988, beating Newcastle United 2-0, while
Burnley remained a free-of-wins record this season by drawing
a goalless draw with Brighton, in the eighth stage of the competition.
And the goals of Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong for
Southampton guaranteed to finish the day at the top of the
league standings, for the first time since the days of his famous
coach Chris Nicole 32 years ago.
Nearly a year after their humiliating 9-0 defeat to Leicester City,
the team has undergone such a radical transformation that it
appears to be able to go far.
This is the sixth successive victory for Southampton, but he may
lose his lead according to the results of Liverpool, Leicester,
Tottenham, Everton, and Wolverhampton, who now succeed him
in the ranking.
Southampton has 16 points at the top and a goal difference from
Liverpool, compared to 15 points for Leicester, 14 for
Tottenham, and 13 each for Everton and Wolverhampton.
In the second game, Burnley continued their worst league start
without any wins in eight matches since last season.
The team advanced from the bottom of the table, by obtaining
its second point from 7 games, after a 0-0 draw with Brighton,
who won one of its eight matches.
