Spurs Defeat Burnley and Move to Fourth Premiership
Tottenham Hotspur beat relegation-threatened Burnley 1-0 from the Premier League,
advancing the London team to the Premiership’s fourth Champions League qualifying place.
Tottenham moved past London neighbors Arsenal after taking their tally to 68 points from 37 games
and two points behind Arsenal Arsenal, who played 36 games, and could return to fourth if they win Monday away
from Newcastle United.
Spurs dominated play in the first 20 minutes, but Burnley’s defence managed to hold on and goalkeeper
Nick Pope saved several chances, and the visitors came close to finding the hosts’ net through
Maxwell Cornet but for the prowess of French goalkeeper Hugo Loris.
However, immediately before half-time, referee Kevin Friend counted the game and, after “fleeing”
had been reviewed, a penalty for Spurs, saying the ball had touched Burnley’s Yedashley Barnes.
Harry Kane successfully carried out the kick while the Burnley players’ protests and objections continued after
half-time while heading to the dressing rooms.
After the break Pope saved two big chances for the hosts while Barnes’ volley bounced off the post.
