In a new announcement that will undoubtedly
cause alarm to many, there will be no escape from
the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics, which is
already postponed from 2020 to the summer of
2021 due to the outbreak of the new Coronavirus,
if the pandemic is not brought under control next
year, the head of the organizing committee
announced Tuesday.
In an interview with “Nikan Sports” daily,
Yoshiro Mori said that the Olympic Games cannot
be postponed beyond 2021 if the epidemic does not
end, “in this case, it will be canceled,” indicating
that it cannot be postponed again.
The International Olympic Committee agreed with
the Japanese government last month to postpone
the Olympics until July 2021 due to the pandemic
of the Coronavirus, which has killed thousands
around the world.
Asked about the possibility of Tokyo hosting the
Olympics if it was postponed until 2022, Mori said
in an interview with the newspaper, “In this case,
the Olympics will be canceled.”
