Elias Verona caused a huge surprise, after replacing his delay to defeat Juventus, the Serie A leaders, 2-1, and the defending champion suffered the third loss this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo set a record for Juventus by scoring for the tenth consecutive game in the league when the visiting team placed ahead after 65 minutes at the Marc Antonio Bentigudi stadium.
But coach Ivan Joric’s team stunned his guest, so Fabio Borini scored the equalizer before substitute Giampaolo Bazzini scored the winner with a penalty kick near the end.
Juventus remained in the lead with 54 points, but Inter Milan will equal it in the same balance if they beat Milan on Sunday, and third-placed Lazio will reduce the difference to one point with the summit if he outperforms Parma.
Verona jumped to sixth place with 34 points and maintained its record unbeaten for the eighth game in a row.
“What we need to understand is that victories are not a guaranteed thing,” said Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri.
“We have to do more and not rely on our reputation. This team has been accustomed to victories in recent years and we must understand that we cannot lose points.”
Douglas Costa approached the scoring in the first half when he hit the crossbar, and Verona’s celebrations did not last long when a goal scored by Marash Compobla with a header was offended for offside after consulting the assistant video referee.
Ronaldo almost scored when he went to the center of the stadium before he fired a shot that ruled the post at the end of the balanced first half.
The Portuguese striker finally succeeded in opening the scoring with the goal of a wonderful individual effort, as he exchanged the ball with Paulo Dybala to start a counterattack before he outperformed his necks and fired a low shot into the net.
But Verona equalized the result when the ball reached Borini inside the area to hit the bottom corner.
The hosts turned the match upside down when Pazzini scored from the penalty spot after a handball against Leonardo Bonucci, who was awarded the assistant video referee.
In other matches, the first match of Moreno Longo as Turin coach ended with his team losing 3-1 to Sampdoria.
Walter Mazzari split from Turin last week after a four-game losing streak.
But Longo did not succeed in changing his team’s fortunes, and Gaston Ramirez’s duo canceled Torino’s lead by Simone Verdi in the second half, before Armando Itso received a red card due to a violation that resulted in a penalty from which Fabio Quagliarella scored the third goal.
