Chi Adams scored his first goal with Southampton a year after
joining the team with a spectacular long-range drive to lead
the 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, and coach Pep
Guardiola’s team suffered a third consecutive defeat away from
home in the English Premier League.
Adams joined Southampton from Birmingham City for 15
million pounds ($ 18.72 million) in July 2019 and failed to
score in 24 league games with the team.
But Oleksandr Zinchenko lost the ball to Adams, who hinted
the Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson to shoot from above it into
the net from more than 30 meters.
Second-placed City responded with a barrage of attacks, but
Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy stood in the way
of his net.
McCarthy removed a powerful shot from Rahim Sterling and
a header from David Silva after Fernandinho’s bid rebounded
from the post, then saved an opportunity with his foot in front
of Riad Mehrez.
In the second half, City intensified its pressure, but
Southampton survived to advance to 13th place with 43 points
from 33 games, and City’s balance stopped at 66 points,
23 points behind the hero Liverpool.
